Global Exchanges should include a combination of presentations on how local government functions in your particular country and the role of professional management; networking opportunities and discussions with local government professionals and staff; and site visits to illustrate innovative programs. Activities and programming should foster meaningful interaction and highlight local government topics of shared interest with ICMA members.
The exchange can be part of an already planned event or conference. The program should last 5 business days with some built-in time for exchange participants to connect to their communities as needed. We encourage activities that enable participants to engage directly with local government counterparts to share challenges and solutions. ICMA is currently accepting applications for 2027 and 2028 Global Exchanges.
Proposals should not conflict with the ICMA Annual Conference or Local Government Reimagined Conferences, the Thanksgiving (US) Holiday, major religious holidays or other major global holidays. Proposals should not be scheduled on or around the following dates:
